Human sperm banking is an accepted and readily available method of gamete cryopreservation for those who desire it and has been an option since the mid-1950s.1 The first successful in vitro fertilization (IVF) birth occurred in 1978,2 followed in 1984 by a birth from a cryopreserved embryo.3 Freezing of surplus embryos is an important adjunct to IVF in most countries, bringing tens of thousands of healthy babies into the world.
