Osteoporosis continues to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in older women. While the Womens Health Initiative confirmed the utility of hormone therapy in fracture risk reduction, it also framed that benefit in the context of other risks and benefits of hormone therapy as a strategy to improve overall health. Bone specific therapies as alternatives to hormone therapy now assume the primary approach to osteoporosis prevention and treatment, including calcium, vitamin D, and established newer bisphosphonates. Updating providers with the latest information in these areas will help to fill in gaps in knowledge and evidence that can be applied to the care of midlife and older women.

This symposium was held on Monday, October 23, 2006 at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine 2006 Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana.
