SCREENING BEYOND THE FIRST TRIMESTER: THE DRAWBACKS
INCREASED FALSE POSITIVES
First trimester screening followed by second
trimester screening interpreted independently
(i.e., sequential screening) leads to an unacceptably
high false positive rate (11% in the FASTER Trial).
DELAYED DIAGNOSIS
When final screening results are delayed until
completion of second trimester screening, the
advantages of first trimester screening are lost.
Patient autonomy and privacy are also
compromised.
COMPLEX COUNSELING
Providing patients with two or more Down
syndrome results may lead to discrepant results that
are difficult to explain to patients and cause
increased anxiety.
LOGISTICAL DIFFICULTIES
Difficulties in coordinating results from blood tests
obtained in two different trimesters and from
different labs could lead to increased possibility for
errors. Additionally, 12% of patients in the FASTER
study did not return for the second trimester screen.
